What the Word "Autonomous" Actually Means on a Spec Sheet
"Self-driving" is used to describe systems that are nothing of the kind, and the confusion is not merely semantic — the distinction is about who is responsible when the system reaches its limit.
The two questions that define the levels
SAE J3016 classifies automation by asking two things: who performs the dynamic driving task (steering and speed), and who is responsible for monitoring the environment and for fallback when the system cannot cope. The autonomy level checker works from exactly those.
The critical boundary sits between Level 2 and Level 3, and it is not about capability. It is about supervision.
Level 2 versus Level 3
At Level 2, the system can steer and control speed at the same time — which feels like driving itself — but you are still monitoring the environment and you are the fallback. You are driving, with assistance. If the system does something wrong, that is your responsibility, and you are expected to be watching continuously.
At Level 3, the system monitors the environment within its operational design domain and you may disengage from watching — but you must be available to take over when it asks. The handover request, and how much time you get, is the whole design problem.
A Level 2 system that is very good can feel more capable than a Level 3 system that is conservative. Capability is not what separates them. Responsibility is.
Where the danger sits
The documented risk with Level 2 is not that the system fails — it is that it works well enough, for long enough, that the driver stops supervising. Good Level 2 systems are more prone to this than poor ones, because they give fewer reasons to intervene.
This is the practical reason to know which level you are actually in. A system marketed with words like "autopilot" or "full self-driving" may be Level 2, and the marketing language is not the classification.
The operational design domain does most of the work
Every system above Level 0 is defined for a specific set of conditions — road type, speed range, weather, lane markings, geography. Outside that domain it does not operate, and the domain is often much narrower than a demonstration suggests.
A Level 3 system approved for divided highways in clear weather below a certain speed is a Level 3 system in that envelope and nothing at all outside it. Comparing vehicles by level alone, without the domain, compares very different things.
Levels 4 and 5
Level 4 handles the entire task within its domain with no expectation of driver fallback — if it cannot continue, it brings itself to a safe stop rather than handing back. This is where robotaxi operations sit, geofenced to mapped areas.
Level 5 is anywhere a human could drive, in any conditions. It does not exist in production, and describing anything currently sold as Level 5 is simply inaccurate.
Why the classification matters to you
Because it tells you what you are responsible for. The checker is an educational classifier, not a regulatory determination — and the authoritative answer for your specific vehicle is its own documentation and the regulations where you drive, both of which can differ from a general description.
The practical version: if you are required to supervise, you are driving. Everything else is a description of how much help you are getting.
Handover is the hard part of Level 3
The engineering difficulty at Level 3 is not driving — it is the transition. A driver who has been permitted to stop monitoring needs time to rebuild situational awareness, and research on takeover requests consistently finds that regaining full attention takes meaningfully longer than people assume.
Which is why Level 3 systems are approved with narrow domains and generous warning times, and why the level exists at all as a separate category rather than as "good Level 2".
Names are marketing; levels are classification
Product names are not regulated the way the classification is, and several systems carry names implying more autonomy than their level supports. The vehicle's own documentation states what the driver remains responsible for, and that is the authoritative source.
If the manual says you must supervise continuously, the system is an assistance system whatever it is called.
