The only difference is that instead of being steered by a human driver, the car’s steering wheel is turned automatically using sensors and computers.

Another major concern is that these cars are still in development, so it’s not certain how they will handle various weather conditions like rain and snow. In addition to these technical concerns, there are social issues such as:

Are self-driving cars safe? Not yet, but the technology is getting there. For example, the Tesla Autopilot driving system has traveled over 200 million miles, which shows its reliability.
The most important thing for safe self-driving technology is to test both the hardware and software extensively in real-life situations. This has not been done enough yet. Such testing should include also testing when something goes wrong (e.g., brakes fail).
Another important element of safety is that a human being can take over the control immediately if needed. In practice this means having a human being behind a steering wheel at all times with his eyes on the road and hands on the steering wheel ready to take control of operations if needed.
