The long-awaited plans for a new 354 home development in Bridgwater have finally taken shape, following a period of revisions to address previous concerns. The development, which was first approved in March 2021, has undergone significant changes to its transport and travel arrangements to ensure that it aligns with the needs of local residents.

  • Previous concerns about traffic congestion on the A39 Quantock Road have been addressed through the introduction of a new signalised junction.
  • The junction will provide improved traffic flow and reduce congestion on the busy road.

As part of the revised plans, Persimmon has committed to providing sustainable travel choices for occupants of the development. This includes the provision of a new traffic signal-controlled access, which will be located at the entrance to the development. The new junction will be constructed as part of the Cokerhurst Farm development opposite, which is currently under construction.

Key Features of the Revised Plans
Key Feature Description
New Traffic Signalised Junction A new signalised junction will be constructed to serve the development off the A39 Quantock Road, providing improved traffic flow and reducing congestion.
Sustainable Travel Choices The development will provide sustainable travel choices for occupants, including a new traffic signal-controlled access and improved road connections.
Affordable Housing 16 of the 112 homes in the first phase will be affordable, representing a reduction of 17.6 affordable homes compared to the original plan.

The revised plans also reveal that construction is expected to commence in early 2026, with the first occupation expected in late 2026 to early 2027. The development is expected to last for around seven years, with the final completion date anticipated to be 2027. According to the developer’s ‘Travel Plan 2.0’, the new traffic signalised junction will provide improved traffic flow and reduce congestion on the A39 Quantock Road. The plan also includes measures to encourage sustainable travel, such as improved road connections and designated parking spaces for cyclists and pedestrians. Despite some concerns raised by Somerset Council’s Housing Development Officer, the revised plans do not mention the affordable housing to be delivered for the remaining 240 homes. The officer stated that the original plan had included 17.6 affordable homes, which will not be met by the revised plan. The revised plans will be debated by Bridgwater Town Council on Thursday, April 17, 2025, providing an opportunity for local residents to provide feedback and input on the proposals. Key Highlights:
